What does a System Operator Do?
System Operator Responsibilities
A System Operator monitors and manages utility power-system conditions to maintain safe and reliable grid performance. The role requires continuous attention to system conditions, operational procedures, communications, and potential reliability risks.
Real-Time System Monitoring
Monitor grid conditions, equipment status, power flows, voltage levels, and system alarms to identify changing operating conditions.
Grid Control & Coordination
Manage system conditions and coordinate operating activities with generation, transmission, distribution, and other control-room personnel.
Outage & Switching Coordination
Support planned and unplanned outages, switching activities, equipment isolation, and restoration procedures in accordance with established operating practices.
Emergency Response
Respond to system disturbances, equipment failures, severe operating conditions, and other events requiring timely operational decisions.

Certifications
