What does a Senior Estimator Do?
Lead Complex Estimates
Leads detailed estimates for complex heavy civil projects from bid document review through final pricing.
Develop Cost Models
Builds detailed cost models using quantities, production rates, labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and project-specific assumptions.
Evaluate Subcontractor Pricing
Reviews subcontractor and supplier proposals to validate scope, pricing, exclusions, and commercial assumptions.
Assess Bid Risk
Identifies scope gaps, constructability concerns, schedule constraints, market uncertainty, and other factors that could affect project cost.
Support Pursuit Decisions
Works with company leadership and operations teams to refine pricing, evaluate risk, and support go/no-go and final bid decisions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead detailed estimates and bid proposals for complex heavy civil construction projects.
- Review drawings, specifications, scopes, schedules, site conditions, and contract requirements.
- Develop quantity takeoffs and detailed labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals while identifying exclusions, scope gaps, and pricing risks.
- Partner with operations and leadership to establish pricing assumptions, contingencies, risk allowances, and final bid strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience
7-15+ years of heavy civil construction estimating, cost estimating, preconstruction, or related experience.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent construction experience may qualify.
Certifications
Relevant estimating, construction management, engineering, or industry-specific credentials can be beneficial.
