What does a MEP Estimator Do?
Review MEP Bid Documents
Reviews mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings, specifications, schedules, addenda, and other bid documents to establish project scope.
Perform MEP Takeoffs
Performs detailed quantity takeoffs for equipment, fixtures, piping, ductwork, electrical systems, materials, labor, and other MEP components.
Develop MEP Pricing
Develops labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and vendor pricing using project requirements, production assumptions, and historical cost information.
Evaluate MEP Scope & Risk
Identifies scope gaps, design coordination issues, exclusions, procurement considerations, escalation risks, and other factors that can affect project cost.
Prepare Competitive Bids
Compiles complete MEP estimates and works with preconstruction and project leadership to establish competitive and profitable bid strategies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings, specifications, schedules, and bid documents.
- Perform detailed MEP quantity takeoffs and develop labor, material, equipment, and installation costs.
- Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor, vendor, and supplier quotations.
- Identify scope gaps, design conflicts, exclusions, assumptions, and potential MEP cost risks.
- Prepare accurate MEP estimates and collaborate with preconstruction, operations, and project leadership on bid strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience
3-10+ years of MEP construction estimating, preconstruction, mechanical/electrical/plumbing estimating, or related experience.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent MEP construction experience may qualify.
Certifications
Relevant estimating, engineering, construction, or project management credentials can be beneficial.
