About the Food Scientist Role

A Food Scientist applies scientific and technical knowledge to the development, improvement, testing, and production of food and beverage products. The role may support formulation, ingredient selection, product testing, process development, shelf-life evaluation, and manufacturing scale-up. In addition, the Food Scientist works with research and development, quality, production, engineering, and supply chain teams to move products from concept through commercial manufacturing. For example, the role may conduct product trials, evaluate formulations, investigate quality variations, or support the transition of a product into full-scale production. What does a Food Scientist Do?

Develop Food Products

The Food Scientist develops and improves food and beverage products through formulation, ingredient evaluation, testing, and product trials.

Optimize Formulations

Evaluates ingredients, formulations, processing conditions, and product characteristics to improve quality, consistency, performance, and cost.

Support Product Testing

Conducts laboratory, sensory, stability, and other product evaluations to assess product performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

Support Manufacturing Scale-Up

Furthermore, works with production and engineering teams to transfer products and processes from development environments into commercial manufacturing.

Maintain Food Safety & Quality

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Experience

3-8+ years of experience in food science, product development, food manufacturing, formulation, R&D, or a related discipline, preferably within a commercial food or beverage environment.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline preferred. Advanced degrees may be beneficial for specialized research and development positions.

Certifications

HACCP, PCQI, food safety, sensory science, Lean Six Sigma, or other relevant food science and manufacturing certifications can be beneficial depending on employer requirements.
